Because of the worrying increase in plane accidents in recent days, the company Siaustral may finally have found the solution that could completely revolutionize transport in the Pacific. Its new project, called the Politrain, is expected to connect all the islands together with an ultra-fast underwater train. The goal is to develop tourism on a massive scale while offering a means of transport presented as safer and more eco-friendly. According to early information, it could soon take less than 20 minutes to travel from Wallis to Futuna, and only 30 minutes to reach Noum\u00e9a. If this project becomes real, it could be a spectacular change for the whole region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are the problems behind this project?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

But behind this incredible announcement, several huge challenges remain. The main one would be building a tunnel similar to the Eurostar tunnel, except that they would need to dig not one, but three: one to Fiji, one to Futuna, and one to New Zealand. According to Siaustral, the three tunnels could be built at the same time in order to save time, even if the cost would be enormous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safety is also already raising many questions among local people. To reassure the public, the company is expected to equip each train with a GPS system, reinforce the structure of the carriages, and install between 10 and 50 oxygen pumps. On top of that, a real-time camera system and remote control technology could also be added. Siaustral claims that everything would be designed to avoid even the smallest accident under the ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What comes after this project?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

And this would only be the beginning. After Wallis, the company is already said to be planning an extension to Tahiti by 2038, and later to other parts of the world. Its stated ambition is to reduce transport accidents from 70% to 20%. For some people, the Politrain represents the future; for others, it still sounds too good to be true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
